At the time of their first album, Northern Ireland's punk pop maestros were teenage stars while still waiting for their A level results. In the five years since their widely acclaimed debut, 1977, Tim Wheeler's band have learned quickly. Their second album Nu-Clear Sounds suggested a new heavier direction. But, in the 18 months it took them to write and record their third album, Ash have gone even further. With second guitarist Charlotte Hatherley now an integral part of the group, Wheeler is free to reclaim his pop craftsman mantle. Classic 1960s symphonic pop has inspired songs such as "Someday" and "Candy", the latter actually sampling The Walker Brothers' "Make It Easy On Yourself" to heart-stopping effect. Wheeler completed many of the compositions on Free All Angels at his parents' home in Ireland, and the wistful feel of old memories made fresh with sizzling guitar and stomping beats suggest Ash will be around for the long haul.
